+ Nyarlathotep is immortal, but not in the conventional sense of "Haha, I'm impervious to your weapons puny mortals." or "Cut off my arm, will you?! Let's just reattach that right back!" -- No, Nyarlathotep is immortal in the sense that every time he “dies”, his human body transforms into something that looks like a shadow of this before it disappears into thin air. The Outer Gods then apparently put him back together again with super-glue and madness, and then, after anywhere from a single day to a week or so passes, he's back on his feet again. Like magic. harhar + Nyarlathotep can shape-shift into a wide variety of creatures (rats, bats, beetles, snakes, wolves, eldritch horrors from beyond out of space, etc), and can also change the shape of his body (Growing extra heads, arms, mouths, wings, becoming puddles of blood/shadow/mist, changing genders, becoming bigger or smaller, etc, etc. You get the idea.). He cannot take the form of something smaller than a house-fly or larger than an elephant, and he cannot change the total of his mass. + In addition to shapeshifting in such a manner, Nyarlathotep can also create "Avatars" of himself for when he literally needs to be "in two places at once". Each Avatar functions as a semi-sentient being that looks, feels, acts, and has all of the same powers of its creator save for the original Nyarlathotep's access to spells, immortality, and summoning abilities. In addition to this, each Avatar can only physically stay "sapient" while Nyarlathotep is within ten miles of it, or else it vanishes, phased out from existence. + Nyarlathotep can summon any of the servitor or independent races that worship the Outer Gods through the use of certain complicated rituals. He most heavily relies on this ability to "get the job done," when someone gets in his way, seeing as he usually detests actual combat and sees physical violence as more of a means to an end instead of something to really enjoy like the rest of the Cthulhu Mythos creatures do. (More on that below, in the Personality section.) + Nyarlathotep is an extraordinarily powerful psychic and an avid practitioner of magic (of at least several thousand years). And while this facet of his "powers" will obviously have to be downplayed quite a bit due to the City’s power-dampening effect, suffice to say that, without it? Anything that you think can be done with magic, he can do without breaking a sweat. Same thing with mental defenses and attacks -- in his own canon, just listening to him speak is enough for someone to lose control of themselves and go insane. |
"And it was then that Nyarlathotep came out of Egypt. Who he was, none could tell, but he was of the old native blood and looked like a Pharaoh. The fellahin knelt when they saw him, yet could not say why. He said he had risen up out of the blackness of twenty-seven centuries, and that he had heard messages from places not on this planet. Into the lands of civilisation came Nyarlathotep, swarthy, slender, and sinister, always buying strange instruments of glass and metal and combining them into instruments yet stranger. He spoke much of the sciences - of electricity and psychology - and gave exhibitions of power which sent his spectators away speechless, yet which swelled his fame to exceeding magnitude. Men advised one another to see Nyarlathotep, and shuddered. And where Nyarlathotep went, rest vanished; for the small hours were rent with the screams of a nightmare." Major Timeline of Nyarlathotep’s Activities - Arrival on Earth/Colonization of the Continent of Mu and Vaalbara - The Mi-go and the Deep Spawn are enslaved by Nyarlathotep and Cthulhu, respectively. - The Creation of Atlantis, Lemuria, Cibola, and the Nameless City. - Cthulhu and Nyarlathotep war for supremacy. - Cthulhu manages to summon the Great Old Ones, causing the first Ice Age sometime before the start of the Cenozoic era. - Silence. - The Sinking of the Continent of Mu, and the fall of R’yleh. Cthulhu goes into hibernation - Lemuria is wiped from existence, forgotten for all time. - Atlantis falls into the ocean; the Great Old Ones are banished from physical reality. - Nyarlathotep “reemerges” as a pagan deity named “The Black Man.” - Stonehenge is built. - The village of Arkham is founded. - The Nameless City is buried underneath the sands of the Sahara. - Nyarlathotep serves as an advisor for many Pharaohs of Egypt; helps design and build Hamunaptra (the City of the Dead), the Valley of Kings, and the Great Pyramids. - Hamunaptra sinks into the sands; Nyarlathotep spends the next few centuries merely observing humanity, going from place to place at a whim. - Abdul Alhazred writes the Necronomicon; the events of the Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath take place. - Cthulhu “rises” from his sleep only to be put back into hibernation by Nyarlathotep’s machinations. - The events of the Nyarlathotep Dream Cycle begin - Nyarlathotep’s “Nikola Tesla” persona gains infamy. - The Events of the short-story “Nyarlathotep” take place. - The Great Depression begins. - The Necronomicon is lost. - The events of “The Dreams in the Witch-House” take place. - Silence. |
